1. Pat-a-Cake

I had to include the absolute classic that is Patty Cake as my first hand-clapping game. And by classic I mean it, it was first recorded all the way back in 1698! I think It was the hand-clap game that I ever learned. It’s easy to play and remember so it’s the perfect game to start with. It will boost their confidence and give them the bug to learn more. Pattycake has been the start of many kids’ addiction to hand-clapping games.

This is another easy one to get you started. (We don’t want to overwhelm you with a Tic Tac Toe handclap straight away, that wouldn’t be fair!). It’s a classic, Double Double is the hand clap that you knew everyone would know. The game you could start without the other person being confused. There are a lot of things to wonder about Miss Mary Mack, like who was she? And if it only cost 50 cents to get into the zoo then she must have lived a long time ago! 

In terms of difficulty I have included Miss Mary Mack now because once your 3-year-old has learned Pat-a-Cake and Double Double, Miss Mary Mack only adds a few more elements to the game.

The person who wrote this was obviously a fan of McDonald’s. Or maybe it was just a genius advertising ploy from the company itself? Who knows, advert or fast-food lover, the person who invented this hand-clapping game for kids created a popular one. Every time I Hear this hand-clap it makes me hungry– McDonald’s anyone?

Numbers is a hard hand-clapping game. It took me a while to get the hang of this one. But, I couldn’t have a list full of easy games now, could I? It’s a great game for concentration and learning counting. If you find it too hard then I would simplify the hand clap and keep the game more about counting.

Elevators is a short and cute hand-clapping game. It’s not long, or have complicated lyrics. It never fails to make people giggle though because at the end you both see how fast you can go without messing up!

The best video I could find to show you how this hand-clapping game is played is in German. Sorry about that! It doesn’t matter though, you can see on the video clearly how to perform this hand clap. It’s a short and funny hand-clap with an almost sea shanty feel. I can imagine children down at the docks doing this hand-clap probably a hundred years ago. Well, there was no cable or YouTube back then.

To play the four white horses hand-clapping game you need at least four people (Yes, the clue is in the name). It’s a difficult hand clap but don’t let that put you off. It’s really fun getting together with three other people and getting through the whole thing without making a mistake. Give it a try!

26. Bim Bum

The video showing you how to do this hand-clapping game is very annoying but it was the best one I could find that shows you the method. Just try and ignore the over-the-top opera singing from the two bothersome birds. Get through it once, learn the hand clap game with your kid and NEVER WATCH IT AGAIN.

27. Dr. Pepper

This hand-clapping game has an unusual origin. It all started with a TV commercial for the drink Dr.Pepper. Then some bright spark put the lyrics to a hand-clapping game. Was it Dr.Pepper’s marketing department? I guess we’ll never know.

28. Quack Diddly Oso

Quack Diddly Oso is another group hand clap game to play with your friends. It takes only a few minutes to learn but when It gets faster is so much harder to master. Next time you and your friends are bored, give it a try.


29. Boom, Snap, Clap

Boom, snap, clap is more than just a hand-clapping game for your kids. It involves “body percussion”. This is when you hit or use your body to make a sound. If you incorporate this into a hand-clapping game then it makes it more difficult but much more interesting. Watch the video to see what I mean.


30. John Kanaka-naka

This is going beyond hand-clapping, now we are performing a whole dance. It’s another one that’s great to do with friends or even better in a large group, just like this video. When everyone is in time it looks and sounds amazing. Next time your in a big group and nobody knows what to do, why not suggest they learn John Kanaka-naka?
